Tuscany: The Winemaker’s Apprentice

The Winemaker's Apprentice

The Winemaker’s Apprentice

A day spent grape picking in the vineyard will teach you a thing or two about winemaking – it’s bloody hard work – but imagine the satisfaction of uncorking a bottle that you had a hand in producing! Join us for 7 or 4 nights for this unique course (optional back breaking experience included). The Winemaker’s Apprentice is a new school where you get to play at winemaker for the day. The classroom is the vineyard, so expect to get dirty. What you will be doing depends on the time of year that you visit, but could be pruning, picking, blending (the day will be very physical and is optional). The course is also a complete guide to Italian wine, grapes and regions. We will visit five (three on the 4 night course)  wine estates (including one in Brunello, Chianti and a local producer of Vin Santo) to see how they grow and make their wine.  However we don’t forget that you are on holiday! We set aside plenty of time for you to relax by the pool or explore the region – Siena and Arezzo are just a short drive away. Most evenings I will guide you through a new Italian region using six carefully chosen wines. There will also be an optional cookery masterclass followed by dinner.

The price (£1499 for 7 nights or £899 for 4 nights) includes full board, wines, accomodation, tuition and 6 bottles of the wine you help to make! Please email me for further details: matt[at]daygustation[dot]co[dot]uk

Is the price really inclusive? Yes, everything is included apart from your travel:

Where will I stay?

You will stay in one of the four villas and the price is based on two people sharing a twin. The villas are beautiful, traditional and comfortable, but please don’t expect a 5 star hotel. There are two six person villas (three twins/doubles) and two four person villas (two twins/doubles). There is a lovely swimming pool (May-September), tennis court, table tennis, boules pitch and extensive gardens.

Food

As well as the 3 course dinner, a light breakfast and lunch will be provided. However it is highly recommended that you try a couple of the local restaurants at lunchtime.  The menu is based around dairy, fish and meat, but we can also cater for vegetarians and people with gluten intolerance.

Wine

Wine for the course and dinner each day are included. The average UK retail price of our wines is £15-40 – we can run fine wine (£50+) courses for an additional charge. We will also provide a good supply of delicious local wine, beer and spirits.

Equipment
Glasses, knives, aprons and everything else you need for the course will be provided. We will receive detailed notes for the wines and recipes. We provide towels in the villas.

Travel and local transport

Flights are not included. Perugia airport is 1 hour away by car, but there are very limited flights from the UK. Florence is about 1hour and flights are increasingly regular. Pisa airport is 2 hours away by car. Rome airport is 3 hours away by car.

A car is the best way to reach Monte San Savino and the only way to explore the region. The villa is nearly 2 miles from Monte San Savino.  Monte San Savino does have a railway station which connects with Arezzo/Florence/Bologna. If you don’t want to drive we can arrange a transfer (£99 return).

We will drive you to and from the winery visits!
